Note in the July-August 1942 'OTHELLO' programme:
"At the end of the present season, this Company will open a Provincial Tour. In this, and the long tour preceding this season, the Governors of the Old Vic wish to acknowledge the assistance and co-operation of C.E.M.A. (Council for the Encouragement of Music and the Arts).
Since Mr. John Gielgud and many other famous players co-operated during the summer of 1940 the Old Vic has had only two short seasons in London - both at the New Theatre, owing to serious damage to its own theatre. But it has never been busier. It has conducted no less than fifteen separate tours in two years, carrying productions of ancient and modern classics all over England, Scotland and Wales. It has visited many small mining and industrial towns, as well as the larger provincial centres, and, in spite of the very serious difficulties of war-time production, the scope of its work has been greatly enlarged."
